Save your money and the Earth- Keep your Phone...

You walk into Verizon and the first synapse that fires in someone's head is, "How can I renew their contract or get them into a completely new one for even more commission?"

See most people don't realize that salespeople don't make money from selling phones- it comes   from contract renewals (upgrades) and new, 2 year commitments for service.  Quickly I'll say that T-Mobile by far is the most forward thinking and helpful regarding contracts and phone subsidy, as T-Mobile tends to be far ahead of the pack in terms of brilliance across all fronts- "Wifi-Calling," having AT&T's network while the opposite is not true, no contract plans if you provide your own device, etc."

The reason they don't need you to commit to them for 2 years is because their rates are cheap as dirt, and in my case- they're the ONLY carrier with 4G service, meaning speeds 10 to 15 times faster than even Verizon's Long Term Evolution Network.  Yes, LTE should be TFN- The Forever Network.  One day they'll have 4G here... one day- you'll see... But salesmen will convince you that even though you're paying twice as much for slower service, their very slow service is quite ubiquitous.  They have towers in so dang many places, that it's near impossible to get away from the forever network.  T-Mobile wasn't going to be that- they pay AT&T each month to use their towers along with the ones they have already. 

This brings to mind what will follow (that the iPhone is God) as I sit and wonder why people have to have a slower phone (iPhones are 3G phones and wouldn't do 4G even if the forever network ever got it here.)  They cost twice as much and perform about 1/4th of the functions of an open sourced Android phone.  And mostover, they can struggle at times with what apps they DO have, because the iPhone isn't a dual core device either!  Their 8 year old technology that's overpriced, yet looks beautifully crafted, is simply like buying a Rolls Royce instead of a VW Passat and a European Vacation or two- and a couple months worth of cell service. 

Mark my words, in five years less than 50% of the US will be renewing contracts just to get a percieved discount on a new device.  I used to have customers come in  and sign 2 years to get a $50 phone that you could get new on ebay for $45- and have NO contract.  You could hook that phone up with Page Plus (initially Verizon's Pre-paid department that didn't work out, but still has complete network access at 3G/ 4G speeds).  Then that $45 slider phone would be unlimited at $39.99 per month, meaning you would be saving around $600 per year- $1,200 per contract term by paying $5 LESS for the same phone from anyone but Verizon.  An LG is an LG- Samsungs are Samsungs...---(My figures assume an unlimited, one line plan for the same device over 24 months with Verizon as opposed to Page Plus (http://homePCmedia.com)  I am a Page plus dealer, though I don't do much with it- you can ask me questions if you'd like, but they don't pay me anything to get you to sign up for their service- they can't afford to... I have Page Plus for my Droid X2 and most of my close friends save $30 - $100 a month by using Page Plus now, but I don't fly the flag outside of my office on 127.  

The iPhone is hitting the prepaid market in a big way with Cricket and Virgin Mobile offering Apple's marquee device. But can anyone afford it?
The key dilemma for a prepaid iPhone is exactly what makes the market so strong: the lack of a service contract. Consumers love the ability to jump in and out of a service, but that freedom comes at a price in the form of a higher upfront cost for the phone.
For the iPhone, that's a particularly tough pill to swallow. Cricket, owned by Leap Wireless, is charging $500 and $400 for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, respectively. Virgin Mobile isn't even bothering to give any discounts, offering the two models for $649 and $549.

Now, for anyone willing to pay for a prepaid iPhone, the savings are tremendous. At Virgin Mobile, where the cheapest plan is $30 a month, the total cost over two years would be $1,369. At Leap, it's $1,868.99 (its plan offers unlimited calling). In comparison, AT&T and Verizon's closest comparable plans would cost $2,359.75 over the life of the service contract (they both offer slightly more minutes than Virgin).
So if you're not much of a talker, the Virgin plan is a nice bargain.
Still, the cost of the phone will still be a barrier of entry to many in the prepaid world. Most prepaid customers typically fall into lower income brackets, suffer from credit issues, or both. An expensive iPhone probably isn't the wisest purchase to make for many of these customers.
"The $399 and $499 price points have historically been nearly irrelevant in the prepaid landscape," J.P. Morgan analyst Philip Cusick said in a note issued last week. "Customers will need to come up with the full price on the day of sale. This is not something that traditional prepaid customers can usually do."
Prepaid executives have said in the past that their customers have been increasingly willing to pay more for phones, particularly flashier Android devices. Some are willing to forgo other necessities for a flashier mobile device.
The prepaid carriers like it because it creates a bit of buzz to draw in customers. Given the price tag, it would likely keep customers locked in despite the lack of a contract. No one is going to give up the service after shelling out $500 for a phone. Still, the iPhone is pricier than anything else in the prepaid world. The most expensive phone in Virgin's current lineup is the HTC Evo V 4G, a rebranded version of last year's Evo 3D that costs $299.99. At Leap, the most expensive phone is the Samsung Vitality for $199.99, which is discounted by another $100 if ordered online.
You get what you pay for with Virgin's plans. Despite being a unit of Sprint, it doesn't get the same access to unlimited data. Customers get 2.5GB of data before Virgin throttles, or slows down, the wireless connection.
While most of the other carriers have had the iPhone 4S for a few months, the prepaid players are just getting the iPhone now. Presumably, this will be the first time that prepaid customers will have access to the iPhone. But why buy one now when the next iPhone is right around the corner? It may be better to wait a few months to see what options are available.
Fortunately for iPhone users, there's a healthy resale market. A used iPhone 4S fetches for $389.48, while a used iPhone 4 sells for $245, according to listings found on eBay.
So if you can stomach the large upfront cost, there are some excellent benefits down the line. But shelling out as much as $649 would make anyone -- prepaid or in a contract -- reconsider whether an iPhone is really worth it.

And if you are STUCK on an iPhone and have a better reason than- my mom and sister both have one, then do me a huge favor- GET AN IPHONE! They are made for people just like you.  But don't waste your money on the 4S that talks to you (Androids have been doing so for about 7 years now), because the technology in those iThings has been the same for about 4 years.  When they release a dual core phone, with a 4G chipset- go get you one.  But you might have to do a contract to subsidize that one- My guess is $945 brand new, retail price and all over the Internet too... If you find one for much less, don't buy it......

But all technology, my friends, is going open sourced  (Android, Linux, Ubuntu, .....)  Microsoft and Apple are in real trouble when people can make software that does the same thing as the version selling for $400, $600, $1,800... And because ANYONE can contribute, it's going to grow faster than companies that have to pay their employees to work for them....

REDUCE, REUSE.... Waste not, Want not.... And when you do get a new phone, drop you old one off here to be refurbished and given to the battered women's shelter and to military programs.....

Toxins in Electronics

“Electronics contain a variety of toxic components like lead, mercury, arsenic, beryllium and brominated flame retardants, some of which cause cancer and other adverse health effects,” says Kate Sinding, a senior attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental non-profit. In fact, each individual piece of electronic equipment can contain enough toxins to make a person (or the earth!) seriously ill. According to the Electronics Takeback Coalition, one CRT monitor holds between four and eight pounds of lead. Flat-screen TVs use mercury lamps.
Because electronics contain so many toxins, it’s important not to throw them away with the regular trash. If e-waste gets sent to a landfill, chemicals can leech into groundwater and poison water systems, says Sinding. If they’re sent to an incinerator, all of those harmful compounds get emitted into the air, posing significant health risks to people who breathe that air in. Properly recycling used electronics can prevent noxious chemicals and heavy metals from winding up in the land and in our bodies.

The Ugly Side of E-Recycling

Bringing discarded electronics to recycling or take-back centers is a noble action, but it’s important for consumers to only choose reliable programs. A 2008 report from the Government Accountability Office found that a substantial amount of America’s “recycled” electronics were actually shipped to developing nations like China, India and Africa. Workers in these locations, who are often women and children, disassemble products with their bare hands, exposing themselves to a host of toxins. Plus, electronics sometimes wind up sitting around in unlined pits, where chemicals can leech into soil and groundwater, poisoning the surrounding areas.
Exporting e-waste to developing nations should be illegal, and legislation is being introduced to do just that. But for now, the burden of picking reputable e-recyclers falls on consumers. To that end, consumers should ask every recycling, manufacturer, and retail take-back program if they use e-waste recyclers that are e-Stewards certified. The Basel Action Network (BAN), a non-profit that works to prevent the globalization of toxic chemicals, launched the rigorous certification program last week. The certification ensures that recyclers are not exporting electronics to developing nations and that recycling is handled domestically using state-of-the-art protective measures.

Home Theater becomes a working man's set top box- his amped up PC gone Windows Media Server...

 It used to be gadgets that got people out to the Best Buys and Circuit City stores.  Who knows if it was the Chicken or the Egg, but Best Buy turned out to never be so good of a buy, and gadgets have this terrible phenomenon known as obsolescence.  What Microsoft has been doing with Software lately- now lets keep in mind that Microsoft has no choice; -software is all they do.Over the last few years, the Rokus and "Extender" set tops have become the liazon between connectivity and everyone's' gorgeous, 52" TV.

Very lately I've noticed some of the freeware companies- such as the open source makers of VLC and VLCM (Server).  These programs, at no cost will play files that should only play on a Mac, on an Android device, or perhaps only on Microsoft's Media player.  This ability to play even Adobe's Flash files, makes it truly unique and refreshing at cost.  Knowing the inevitable, Microsoft has had to counter, as counter moves they do very well, and begin designing their own soft- hard wares.   So as time goes on, forget about that #1 selling product on the web (Roku)!  Soon you'll be able to pull back out your old VCR, not to play the tapes, but just for the simple interface between sound card and monitor.   And of course, add in a wifi router and you get the invisible for the sake of brilliant, 3D and deeply colored animation.  You have things working that you've always wanted to work in such a way, but you never had the time or know how to ask someone, "Hey, can I....."

And this might be the final breath for wired cable. If I were attached to any kind of wire right now, I'd be very concerned about the near future and my imminent demise....

There has been a lot of discussion  in the Windows Media Center community about the product's death. The theory is that Microsoft is throwing in the towel, focusing on the Xbox 360 and intends to let the best DVR software available become stale -- or worse, eliminate it from future versions of Windows altogether. After watching the Ballmer keynote at CES last week, it was hard not to get on this train as we all watched the 360, Windows Phone 7, and Windows highlighted on stage. But then something happened when the show floor opened: Windows embedded products were highlighted in private meetings and elsewhere. There was a buzz around Media Center embedded and even a price and ship date; meanwhile, home theater PCs got no love. So after years of trying, it appears that all hopes that HTPCs will ever emerge from their niche status are gone, but the same can not be said for Windows Media Center.

The demise of HTPCs is not for a lack of effort

We've had a fascination with home theater PCs since the first time we saw video running on a PC -- remember Intel MMX? There's something empowering about seeing video run on a PC, and there's been a PC connected to our TV ever since. In fact, we use an HTPC now and have enjoyed its benefits for what feels like forever. But all that being said, we wouldn't offer to set one up for a friend, and we wouldn't give our mother one, ever. The problem is that while a computer geek can make an HTPC do just about anything, a typical user has a hard enough time using a PC to surf the web. There are just too many things that can go wrong, and with the exception of some very high-end models, commercial HTPCs are non-existent. HP stopped making 'em four years ago. Dell never even bothered. Nope, no matter how hard PC manufactures and Microsoft try, HTPCs simply will never go mainstream.

Microsoft has tried as hard as anyone to make this geek dream come true, with multiple versions of Media Center and money dumped into R&D trying to entice programming providers in the US and the rest of the world to bring their programming to Windows. We'd bet that if stock holders had any idea how much money was spent compared to the return, someone would surely get fired. Right about now, there are some people screaming at their computer, complaining that Microsoft never marketed Media Center. Seriously? A company as successful as Microsoft knows a thing or two more than most about marking a product. No, the problem is there's no mainstream market for an HTPC, so realistically-speaking, another few billion dumped into marketing wouldn't have changed a thing (c.f. Kin). Consumer electronics have to be like an appliance, they just need to work. Even some top brass at Microsoft use a TiVo as a DVR instead of a HTPC because they just work. This all makes it easy to understand why Microsoft has re-purposed its software and lined up new partners for an embedded version of Windows 7 Media Center.

Home PC Media can make a media server for $200 or for $20,000 or more.  Software is beginning to replace hardware in our computers everywhere, because it's increasingly capable of telling more things to do , to less - physical devices.

















Why an embedded Media Center just makes sense?


The one thing that every single mainstream DVR and smartphone have in common is that they are all embedded. It's a match between hardware and software that is designed to do a few specific things and do them very well. Microsoft has been making embedded software for a long time, and odds are you've used it at an ATM or stood right in front of someone who used a Windows embedded machine to ring you up at a department store. What's new is that Microsoft ported its Media Center software to the latest embedded version of Windows and is giving hardware partners the chance to build a DVR without spending all the big bucks on developing software. This means that some entrepreneurial electronics manufacturer can grab off the shelf parts, add in a little of Redmond's software and deliver a dependable DVR to mainstream America -- in theory. And a number of companies have already stepped forward with plans. We've been seeing demos at trade shows, and at CES one company even announced it'd ship a product in the 1st quarter for $499. Still a little steep for the mainstream, but far less than the thousands that off the shelf HTPCs cost today. And besides, the first products to market typical cost more.

The bad news is that embedded also means restrictions, and while some are sure to hack their way to more functionality, it won't be as easy. For those not willing to meddle and risk their investment, they'll likely be sacrifices that will have to be accepted. But once people have their hands on the software, anything becomes possible.  You can only solder and cross so many wires.  Commercial free television on Media Center?

You know the greatest thing about Media center, and its plan to be a program laid into another devices, is that one can install a tuner card and watch 20-50 channels in HD, crystal clear and digital, but they aren't recorded.  Digital antenna sales have gone up 650% since 2008.  Many, many people just don't want to see that 189$ cable bill what seems like every week.  And most of these people concerned about these bills are also lacking the see of something else- their TV's.  With mothers working and fathers always gone, there's not a lot of time for TV.  You could record what played that day- but that's what Media Center does... It's a DVR.  But and 5, 5:30, 6 and 7, you've got your local news, baby!  Clear as Aero transparent!


There is some more good news though. Embedded devices make more than just mainstream consumers happy, they also appeal to content owners. Netflix, VUDU, Blockbuster, cable video-on-demand have all been available to embedded devices for some time. Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Verzion and DirecTV weren't showing their programming on a HTPC at CES this year, but they were showing 'em on a variety of other embedded devices. Of course, the PC is completely capable of delivering all this content and more, but media giants aren't going to spend their time and money developing software for a niche whose only measurable result would be to open up a new attack vector to circumvent DRM. So embedded doesn't just mean stability and affordability, it can also mean content.


Extenders vs set-top-boxes

Now, this is where things get interesting. Microsoft tried a few times to proxy the PC into the living room via Extenders and suffice to say the attempts all failed pretty miserably -- same goes for embedded devices, by the way. Maybe the hardware wasn't ready, who knows, but what we do know is that two Media Center PCs don't play well together with DRM'd content and if more than one Media Center in the house has a tuner, things can messy real quick. There have been a few recent changes in the content world that could really impact success here though. The first is the recent change to the CableCARD specification that allows a tuner to be shared over a network. Basically, this means that you can install six CableCARD tuners into a Media Center in the house and watch live TV on any other Media Center (set-top box or PC) in the house that's connected to the same network. That opens up some options, but there are still the DRM problem. Currently, shows recorded from cable marked as Copy Once by the provider are locked to the device they're recorded on, which frankly sucks. But connecting a few dots paints a rosier future.


What does Microsoft, Comcast, Timer Warner Cable, Cable Labs, and just about every major movie studio have in common? They are all a member of the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem and have vowed their support to UltraViolet. We know that joining a group and actually participating are two different things, but it isn't out of the question that Ultra Violet's new DRM could be added to the Cable-labs spec. This would mean that "each household will be able to create an account for up to six members who can access the household's Ultra Violet Movies, TV... Consumers will also be able to register up to 12 devices." This new tech won't be ready until later this year, but it does offer hope that DRM might not always be this bad, some day.  I'm going to takemore than Reycom, Acer / Gateway, and Haier to make this thing take off, but it isn't hard to let your imagination wonder on where this all could go. It would also be hard to argue that this isn't Microsoft's strongest position in the DVR market yet, and while anything could happen, we say long live Media Center with confidence. Who knows, if things go well, all the other previous promising developments for Media Center that never were, might find their way to market too. Then again, we've been wrong before.
More and more people are getting what they've always wanted- to see the show.... Now, with the experience that media server gives you- you're at the show for little money!

That's Allegra's statement regarding a little of what they do.  The thing to remember is that, unlike in the past- your business in being advertised whether or not YOU have anything to say about it or now...

The more proactive we are to seek people to help us with this, the greater chance for exponential growth within a company.  I will say also, that growing out of control sort of sounds like a week.  It's a lot more about being able to communicate directly with your 'base' clientele- the people who send you people time and time again and wouldn't see another person with their questions.  

Direct mail, with all the printing, stamps, licking and editing over and over, just to find a horrible mistake just as you go to mail them- and you drop them in the box anyway.  You don't know what made it where, you don't know if the person opened that letter, and there is no quick avenue to just hit 'reply['  and shoot a message, or hopefully an order right back to you.   

Web marketing, -SEO, email campaigns and so on are healthy if they're balanced with those of social networks advertising and plain old Craigslist.or advertising from time to time- it's a jungle out there... Be a Gorilla!



Recycling unused computers and cellular phones helps far more than most people can realize. Google+ Hangouts On Air allows users to broadcast live video to anyone

I'll tell you one thing that Facebook has to worry about if they don't relax on a bunch of their regulations and policies.  That thing is "Google."

Google has the the coding experts to create the platforms, the obvious connection to nearly every person in America and the tenacity to remain OPEN, as far as what's behind their coding.  When you want to "share" something, for example with Google, there are 101 different elements you can personalize within your icon link that would give props to your site, or that of whomever you'd like. 

The demise of Facebook will be their iron curtain.  As soon as people are so close to figuring out how it all works, they change their format and policies. 

If you're one watching the the whole 'social networking' gamut play out, perhaps searching for where you might fit in, or where your business' presence might be served for the sake of increasing the bottom line- keep Google in sight.  Check it out- get a Google + account or addition to your existing Gmail / Google account.

Google has announced Hangouts On Air is being rolled out, a feature which aims to give Google+ users a way of broadcasting live video to anyone and everyone. On Air was originally introduced last September, but only a select few broadcasters and celebrities had the opportunity to use it -- that is, until today.
Hangouts On Air is an amped-up version of Hangouts, a feature which allows Google+ users to start up video chats with friends. Hangouts, however, have been limited to Circles, which has meant that joining a Hangout required a Google+ account. Unlike traditional Hangouts, Hangouts On Air will be available to anyone, regardless of membership status.
Additionally, the new feature will integrate with YouTube. When a public broadcast is finished and goes off air, Google+ can upload a recording to the user's YouTube channel. Once there, people may then share and discuss your broadcast even after it is over.
Broadcasters will also be able to see how many people are watching, manage users who join the Hangout and focus attention to certain members when desired.
The rollout, according to Google, will "take some doing" so the company plans on gradually introducing the feature. To get started, look for an option to "Enable Hangouts On Air" over the next few weeks.

The coolest thing Google ever did was to make it very, very simple for the average, ordinary individual to reap high financial rewards by simply sitting on his ass all day, and no- not a donkey.

As I talked about in an earlier post- most people punch in things on their phones as they look for phone numbers, places to eat, and even things they didn't know they wanted while they also read the latest texts friends have sent to them and news headlines which can be important from time to time, I guess.  

I'm an old school Ad sense person.  I've been placing code on sites since 2006 and have taken in thousands of dollars.. What I'm excited about is the automation Google seems to have drawn into this new version with Blogger.  They already know who's visiting your site, and if they've figured that much out, then they also know what you listen to, etc...  Google, as I'm understanding will place the ads and change the type of ad depending on who is visiting your website!  The key is what I'm doing now- sounding off at the mouth, without being repulsive or offensive.  Being 5am, however, please don't take offense to me going to bed now- Good Morning!  Hopefully you will see something cool on here you want to buy!  If you don't see it, but know what it is- TELL ME!  I can quickly find it- you get it from WalMart.com, Tiger Direct, etc, deal directly with them all the way through the sale and I'll just kick back and wait on my direct deposited kickback of money I get for getting you to buy your, say, LCD TV through me.  You're still getting the online, same prices- why not help out 'ol Markus here?! Nightly night....
